Deafness

Deafness can either mean a partial or total hearing loss. Some people are born deaf and this can be due to congenital defects. They are unfortunate because they won't be able to hear the sounds in their surroundings. Added to that, they won't also be able to talk since they cannot hear how sounds are pronounced.

There are hearing aids that can help aid those who have problems with hearing. But there are also those who have very profound hearing loss that they cannot benefit from the use of hearing aids. In such cases, bone conduction or cochlear implants can be done to restore hearing.

Deafness may also happen at a later stage in life if a person does not take good care of his ears. Proper care must be given to the ears as it is the one that provides us with our sense of hearing. Abuse of the ears may result to problems with hearing. It must be cleaned regularly but cleaning or removal of the ear wax must be done by an audiologist. Improper way of cleaning may cause damages in the ear drums and may result to problems in the auditory canal.

It is not easy to live life in total deafness. Special consideration must be given to those who are deaf since they would have a hard time expressing themselves. They can only communicate thru sign language. If they are able to talk, with the aid of a hearing aid, it may also be very difficult to understand what they might want to convey since they usually do not speak clearly.

Those who have partial deafness may also be a cause for irritation for some people as they will need to exert extra effort while talking to them by talking a little louder so that they can be heard. It requires a lot of patience and we must understand that they do not wish to be partially or completely impaired with their hearing so they must not be insulted but rather given special consideration.

If we know of somebody who might be risking their hearing for doing things that can damage their ears, we may help them prevent loosing their hearing by giving them early warnings. It is better to warn them earlier and educate them rather than just leave them to do things which you know is damaging their hearing.
