Hearing Loss
Our ears provide us with the capability to hear the sounds around us. Our sense of hearing can be considered as the most important among our 5 senses. It is important in the sense that if we are not able to hear the sounds in our surroundings, our capability to speak would be affected as well.
Try to observe those who were born without the ability to hear. You will notice that most of them are also mute or cannot speak. This is because they cannot mimic the sounds that the people around them utter since they do not have the ability to hear.
If we are gifted with the sense of hearing, we must be thankful and do our part by taking good care of our sense of hearing simply by taking care of our ears. Most people experience hearing loss because of negligence or abuse of their ears.
People do things to their ears that may cause damage to it. Most of them are unaware that what they are doing damages their ears. Using cotton buds to clean our ears can pose danger to our ears. The use of cotton buds to remove ear wax sometimes pushes the ear wax further into the inner ears rather than remove it. The presence of excessive ear wax can block the auditory canal and may cause temporary hearing loss.
Some also experience hearing loss because of damages in their ear drums. The improper way of cleaning and handling the ears, when using ear wax scrapers may harm the ear drums and possibly cause partial or complete hearing loss. The safest way to remove the ear wax is to have an audiologist do the cleaning.
The very popular culprit in hearing loss yet not fully recognized by a lot of people is the exposure of our ears to extremely loud noise. We have the habit of listening to music at extremely loud volumes to get the feel of the music we are listening to. But this can bring an irreversible damage to our hearing. The hair cells in our cochlea get damaged as we constantly expose it to vibrating loud noises.
It is not only through loud music that our ears may be exposed to loud noises but also to very loud power tools or machines or even explosives. There can also be precautionary measures taken to protect our hearing from being damaged by loud noises. Ear plugs and ear muffs may be worn whenever we would expect to be exposed to loud equipments and explosions.
Nobody would want to suffer hearing loss. If we lose our sense of hearing, we will miss out on a lot of things. We will not be able to hear the laughter of the people around us, we will be no longer able to listen to our favorite music, and we can no longer make phone calls. These are just few of the things that we will no longer enjoy if we do not take good care of our ears.
