There are around 13 different important vitamins for our body. This includes vitamin A, the B complex vitamins, C, D, E and K. They are important substances needed for our bodies to develop and grow naturally. Vitamins are found in almost all the food that we eat.
Because some vitamins are destroyed during the preparation process, it is safer to take in supplements even if you are already eating the right food. It must also be understood that vitamins must not be taken in to replace food intake. Taking in vitamins without adequate food intake is definitely a no-no. Vitamins cannot be digested without food.
Vitamins are vital in helping our bodies function normally and it is also essential for our growth, health, well being and helps prevent and cure certain illnesses. Each vitamin has a specific well known function. Vitamin A is good for the eyes, Vitamin C helps in the healing of wounds, Vitamin D is good for the bones, Vitamin E is good for the skin and hair and Vitamin K helps with blood clotting.
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) prevents beriberi, Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) prevents ariboflavinosis, Vitamin B3 (Niacin) prevents pellagra, Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) prevents paresthesia, Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) prevents anemia, Vitamin B9 (folic acid) prevents birth defects and Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) prevents megaloblastic anemia.
Vitamins must not also be taken in doses larger than the recommended daily intake as it can also cause harm to our bodies. People usually have this false belief that because it is vitamins that they are taking in, it is harmless to the body and it is ok to take in large doses especially if they want to hasten recovery from illnesses.
Our body is a very complicated and powerful machine and it can do a lot of things all by itself. The only thing it cannot do is manufacture vitamins. This is the reason why the food that we must take in must be rich in vitamins. Eating foods rich in vitamins while taking vitamin supplements at the same time is probably the best defense you can arm your body from illnesses.
