What is causing tinnitus?

I am not able to link my tintinitis to anything in particular. I have always had tinnitis in a very mild form, such that it is only noticable when the environment is very quiet.
But in the last few weeks my tintinitis has gotten worse, to the point where I can almost always "hear" a very high pitched ringing. It does not seem to interfere with my hearing. I simply hear the ringing in addition to other sounds. I am not sure what is causing the ear ringing.
