When one is exposed to a dramatic and sudden loud noise as Roger certainly was, it is almost guaranteed the cochlear damage occurred. Indeed it sounds like he was very lucky to escape with his life!
Being a transport driver for that length of time, it is likely he was also exposed to loud noise from the engines and this type of exposure would also lead to cochlear damage which in turn would lead to high frequency hearing loss and tinnitus.
Most people don't know that there are millions of microscopic nerve cells deep inside the ear that get stimulated by pressure of loud noises.
