This is surely Meniere’s Disease?
The tinnitus symptoms started 6/28/06 I awoke at 5 am to use the bathroom and then went back to bed until 7am when I was awakened by a loud noise in my left ear sounding like a test pattern on the tv set.I got up, and then realized it was coming from my ear. About an hour later I experienced extreme vertigo and nausea/vomiting. My family doctor saw me immediately and prescribed Rx to treat the vertigo/nausea/vomiting which did go away within 24 hours not to return. He stated I had an inner ear infection and it would clear up in a few days. It did NOT. I have since seen neuro ENT doctors who have concluded after brain/ear MRI, audiogram, a round of steroids orally that I have 100% deafness due to a virus that destroyed the aucoustic nerve. They believe this could be the reason since I had an upper resp. infection approximately 5 weeks prior to the sudden sensorneural hearing loss. The Tinnitus has NEVER STOPPED.
Starting in March I had heel surgery which involved surgical cutting of the achilles tendon as well as a resectioning of the tendon (I had a large cyst between the tendon and heel bone)
There was some nerve damage at the ball of the foot which interestingly on a reflexology chart is exactly the area for the left ear. I am not knowledgeable in the Egyptian study of Reflexology to make a statement of belief or disbelief and only came upon the chart by accident, but throw that out there as an interesting observation.
To continue, after 3 months of non wt bearing except with crutches, my husband who was my caregiver while I was recuperating and off work, had an unexpected triple open heart bypass surgery ( he hadnt been sick in 20 years and only complained of a shortness of breath..
I insisted he had a check up which revealed 3 100% blocks and resulted in surgery 3 days later) After his surgery, June 10th and recovery the roles switched somewhat as I was then on 1 crutch and eventually walking.. it seemed that things were getting back on track when the June 28th event of my sudden hearing loss and tinnitus occurred.
I am about to return to work this week being released from the foot doctor. I am apprehensive about the return because of the continual tinnitus from which there has been no relief and the difficulty with hearing from my good ear when in a crowded room of talkers it is much worse.
The louder the external noise the louder the tinnitus with the feeling of being down in a tunnel, making it difficult to concentrate. I am also hypothyriod, type II diabetic, 53 yr old wf. I was reading with interest about stress induced tinnitus.
I have had my share of stress regarding the surgeries, scare of my husband’s cardiac surgery/condidtion..but it happened after that..maybe the strong person during the crisis and falls apart after it’s over?
I don’t know..I’m searching for answers I may never get. Could stress alone cause a 100% hearing loss as well as a continual tinnitus? I realize that whatever the cause the result is stress from the noise that never goes away!!!
If the root cause it not stress, but a medical cause, would your stress formula be helpful (with the hypothalmus connection) or what do you think about my situation?
I have no trouble sleeping. Sharon
Hello Sharon,
You really have my sympathies! I hope your husband is doing OK after his bypass surgery? Normally when you experience extreme vertigo and nausea/vomiting WITH tinnitus I would immediately say that you are suffering from Meniere’s Disease.
You can often control the nausea and vertigo by following a low salt diet.
