Tinnitus Triggered by Colds

We have heard of complains from those who have a tolerable tinnitus that whenever they would catch a cold, they would feel the noise or the tinnitus to be much louder. They have the impression that their tinnitus is triggered by colds. They have actually experienced it more than once that is why they have this kind of impression.

If we try to look at it, our ears and nose are two structures that are positioned close to each other. Because of this anatomical position, whenever we would catch a cold, the pressure due the presence of mucus fluids in the nose can have an effect to our ears. Even if we do not have tinnitus and we catch a cold, we can observe that we would sometimes feel a pressure in our ears that we would want to shake off but it just would not go away no matter how we try to rub our ears with our fingers.

For a person who may already have tinnitus, this pressure can actually aggravate the noise. For those who have tinnitus at a tolerable level, they may notice the noise becoming loud every time they catch a cold which then makes them think that tinnitus is triggered by colds. They say it is triggered by colds because they have actually learned to just ignore the tinnitus noise that they hear.

It is easy for them to do this since their tinnitus sound is not that loud and does not bother them in any way and it is only when they catch a cold that the tinnitus noise would start to bother them. Knowing that catching a cold would spell problem for their tinnitus, we would advise all tinnitus sufferers out there to as much as possible protect themselves from catching a cold.
