Most Probable Tinnitus Causes

 Hello Birgit,

I have added my comments  and suggestion in italics after your questions. Thank you for your kind words. :)

Dear Ellen and John,

Thank you very much for all your information about Tinnitus. I downloaded the book and it is just wonderful to read, Ellen, that you consider yourself almost “cured” now, even though you had a severe case of tinnitus! It gives everyone HOPE — including me.

As far as a cause is concerned, my ENT told me that the cause is my hearing loss, and I am pretty sure my hearing loss stems from using loud and high-pitched hair blowers for years. Unfortunately! I had no idea it could be harmful, but I am very careful now. I have definitely noticed that noise makes my tinnitus worse (a few weeks ago, when it all started, I couldn’t even hold a telephone to my right ear without “setting off firecrackers” or “cicadas” in my head). It’s a little bit better now!

The cicadas like noises are typical of tinnitus induced from exposure to noise.

Since I have had hearing loss for quite a while and have been using hearing aids for about seven years without any problem with Tinnitus before, I wondered of course what could have triggered it. I think Ibuprofen is one reason. I had just been taking the maximum dose for a week in order to get rid of back ache, before my daughter and grand children arrived from N.Carolina! (Too bad!!) Maybe stress also — we had just put our house on the market - even though I didn’t feel stressed. In any case, it seems that noise is the overriding factor for me now. I am thinking of buying some good ear plugs to use when I am in a noisy environment. But how am I going to hear what people say then, when I am in a group of lively conversationalists?!

Tinnitus does often get “triggered” by an event, stress or taking medication that causes tinnitus. I your case it was most likely a combination of the aforementioned.

In one of your e-mails you wrote that the noise you hear can sometimes be a clue to the cause of tinnitus.
Strangely enough I have different kind of noises in my ears at different times! It is my right ear that has given me the worst problems with crackling noises to start and then exploding into “firecrackers”. The noise in my head has been somewhat less loud with pauses the last two weeks, more like ” cicadas” that come and go (That is a little easier to take!) Sometimes my right ear can be totally quiet but with a “pling” now and then (the sound you hear when a spoon hits a crystal glass.)

Cracking, clucking or whirring sounds are very often the result of sinus problems that cause tinnitus.

Unfortunately, however, my left ear has started up (I really got panicky when that happened), but the noise has been more subdued (just a little crackling)) and it seems like the noise in my head is either on one side or the other.

In general, my tinnitus is much less severe now and I can breathe a little easier. I actually went 48 hours last week without any noise (!!)– but then it came back.

What seems to help me is to 1) not wear hearing aids (have you heard anybody else say that?) (actually I have! :))

2) be in as quiet environment as possible  3)not even talk on the phone-if it is possible– or hold the receiver far from your ear when you do. (Use the hands free option where possible, that way you will not aggravate any cochlea damage.)

I tried that for a couple of days to get my ears to “calm down” and it seemed to help. (That’s when I managed to go 48 hours without any noise but of course it could have been a coincidence.) I am also taking Lipo-Flavonoid, which I bought before I heard about you. It cost $30, so I want to finish it before I buy your remedies, which I will probably try — unless I should have a miraculous recovery before that.  (Wishful thinking!) I haven’t seen any prices, though. Let me know, please. I also presume that I don’t have to buy the Total Tinnitus Solution, but will be able to buy parts of it.

Birgit I would suggest you call Ellen on 800 314 2910 and have a chat. She will hold your hand through the whole process and guide in the right direction. If the line is busy simply leave a message and she will call you back. :)

Thank you again for giving Tinnitus sufferers HOPE and for being compassionate!
Sincerely,
Birgit Wills

Thanks again for your kind words!
