Hearing Damage: Loud Noise

Hearing Damage: Loud Noise

Attending concerts, listening to our MP3 players for hours, working near a construction site — these are just some of the noises that we are exposed to. They are parts of our lives that we sometimes forget their negative effects, especially to our ears.

Of the cases of hearing damage, loud noise exposure is the most common cause especially in our generation today of iPods and video games. Our ears getting damaged has various implications, and they can be serious. These include total loss of hearing and tinnitus or ringing in the ears. These conditions can affect our daily activities just like communicating with our colleagues and performing our chores effectively. They can even cost us our personal relationships.

It is therefore important that we have to take care of our sense of hearing. It does not mean that we stop listening to music or stop going to concerts. While we can still do them, let us make sure that we do them in moderation. A common example is setting our stereos or MP3 players to a moderate volume. Or, when our jobs require us to be exposed to loud noises, then let us protect our ears by wearing devices like earplugs or special earmuffs.

Let us protect our sense hearing because we might not be able to realize its important until it has been damaged.
