Noise Coming from Ears
Do you wonder why you hear a sound, most probably a ringing sound while your family, friends, or colleagues do not although you are in the same environment? When you perceive a noise coming from ears or head, then you have tinnitus, more commonly known as ringing in the ears.
The American Tinnitus Association defines it as “the perception of sound in the ears or head where no external source is present.”
Although tinnitus usually comes as a ringing noise, it may also come as either a buzzing, humming, hissing, chirping, whistling, or rushing noise.
Majority of the cases of tinnitus is caused by cochlear damage due to sudden or repeated exposure to loud noises. Listening to music with our stereos or MP3 players set to a high volume, going to rock concerts or working in a very noisy environments without wearing ear protection devices are just some of the common reasons why a person experiences ringing in the ears.
Its other known causes include stress, sinus problems or allergic reactions, Meniere’s Disease, head or neck injuries, age-related hearing loss, thyroid disorder, and vitamin B12 deficiency.
If you experience tinnitus, it is recommended that you go visit your doctor immediately as you may be suffering from an underlying medical condition. Also, knowing the root cause of the unwanted sound will help you find the right treatment for you.
