Possibilities of Ear Damage When Wearing a Helmet

By John On June 3, 2010 Under Tinnitus Articles

Yes, helmet may save you from a lot of vehicular accident horrors, but it could also cause a lot of problems for you especially in terms of your hearing. A group of specialists have found out that wearing a helmet could possibly damage the ears of its wearer. How is this so? Once the motorcycle is on the move and is running seventy miles per hour, the speed produces sounds that are much louder than the average noise limit at work. Going beyond the recommended noise limit at work is already enough to cause damage to one’s ears.

Quite surprisingly, the noises that one hears at this situation does not emanate from loud automobile engines or exhausts. Instead, the noise comes from the very airflow that passes over the helmet. What about the possibility of wearing ear plugs in order to prevent further ear problems such as tinnitus and looking for specific alternative tinnitus treatments? They are actually useless. This is because the noise travels to the ears from the person’s bones. Surprising? Well, not really as this has already been a known fact in researches for twenty years.

However, no further studies have been made to address this issue until now. A group of scientists have finally decided to conduct a research in order to find out from which route the noise is coming from so that better protective measures can be undertaken. This is actually a much better option than to stop motorcyclists from wearing any protection at all when riding their bikes.
