New Ototoxic Drugs Pin Pointed

By John On September 5, 2010 Under hearing loss

Ototoxic drugs cause temporary hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness or vertigo to certain people. Aspirin, NSAIDs, some chemotherapy drugs, and some allergy medications are labeled ototoxic, which means they can cause hearing impairment in the long run. However, people who are already suffering from hearing loss or tinnitus should shy away from these medications. Effective tinnitus treatments or therapeutic approaches should involve non-ingestion of ototoxic or neurotoxic medications.

Right now there are more than 200 drugs, both prescription and non-prescription medications, classified as ototoxic. This is why particularly sensitive people should read drug labels and contraindications. Also, inform your doctor regarding hearing-safe prescriptions before heading to the drugstore. You should also watch out for side effects of some medications. If you feel dizzy or if you notice ringing in the ears after taking a medication, inform your doctor about it.

Identifying medications that are ototoxic is a challenge for researchers, and in response to this challenge the FDA keeps tracking down possible ototoxic drugs based on patient reports. For instance, Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis have been recently reported to cause sudden loss of hearing, and there were also reports of accompanied vertigo and ringing in the ears—all classic signs of ototoxicity. Experts warn that you must report to your doctor once a prescribed medication or any medication causes you to lose your hearing in either or both ears. Also, report tinnitus and dizziness if they occur shortly after taking a medication or if you suspect the medication you’re taking may be causing the symptoms (whether they develop abruptly or slowly).

This information is worth reading and recommending since not many people understand toxicity of medications or their side-effects being invasive enough to actually harm their hearing. Most of us regard digestion or headache like symptoms as minor side-effects of potent prescription medications…how many of us have ever wondered that these medications might be dampening our hearing ability?
