Hearing Loss Becoming More Prevalent in Teens

By John On September 17, 2010 Under hearing loss

Health specialists are getting concerned about the rampancy of hearing loss in younger people. Recently, it has been reported that more teens are being diagnosed with hearing impairment. Statistics shows that about 1 in 5 teens has some form of hearing impairment. It used to be only 1 in 7, and this rise is just staggering.

Most cases of hearing loss in teens are attributed to loud noise exposure. Well, many teens are fond of their iPods being played at high volumes. With no one to tell them off for doing such damaging behavior, they are susceptible to noise induced hearing impairment. Loud music is being blamed for the increasing number of younger people suffering from mild hearing loss.

In other words, prevention is simple. You only have to turn down volumes of speakers, televisions, and iPods. Parents should warn their kids about the damaging effects of loud noise, but kids and teens can really be stubborn. Schools and teachers should encourage young teens to take care of their hearing. Staying away from loud noise becomes a crucial aspect of treating hearing conditions, like hearing loss and tinnitus.

Unfortunately, there is no absolute treatment for noise induced hearing impairment. Hearing loss and tinnitus treatments remedy the problem but only to some degree. Hearing aids may work but these devices do not completely correct the existing damage.
