Hearing Loss and Noisy Workplaces

By John On September 21, 2010 Under hearing loss

One of the most bothersome health issues today is occupational hazards like workplace noise. Job-related hearing impairment has become a pressing matter that caught the attention of specialists and health. Heavy industrial machinery can generate overwhelming noise that staying too long endangers one’s hearing. But a worker assigned to acoustically hazardous areas cannot just quit because of the noise.

The best way to avert this work-related hearing impairment is to wear ear protective devices. Employers should ensure the safety of their workers by recommending the wearing of protective/safety gears. In areas where there is deafening sound from machinery, workers must wear ear plugs. Also, workers using noise-generating equipment should don ear muffs or ear plugs to halt development of hearing loss due to loud noise.

Carpenters, plumbers, miners, and military men are at high risk of occupational hearing loss. Also, people in construction, transportation, and manufacturing industry may also be at risk of noise induced hearing impairment.

Employees should assess noise hazard in working environments to address hearing loss susceptibility issues. This should be part of the means to protect the welfare of workers, who after all are just working for the progress of the company. On the other hand, it is the initiative of the afflicted employee to do necessary steps in order to save their hearing.

It should be understood that noise is the major culprit of hearing loss and tinnitus. Cutting back on noise exposure is an important aspect of any medical or alternative tinnitus treatments.
