Learning the Symptoms of Hearing Disorders
Hearing problems involve a disability to hear sound or to discriminate different sounds or to understand sounds. Hearing disorders may include ringing in the ears, earache, pressure in the ears, hearing loss, and discharge. Such disorders may occur as a result of injury, infection, or underlying disorder. Generally, the following should warrant medical attention:
You hear ringing in the ears after exposure to loud noise. Tinnitus or ringing ears usually occurs as a result of loud noise damage. Ringing in the ears is also an indication that your inner ears have sustained damage.
Partial hearing loss accompanied by earache and feeling of fullness in either ear is commonly due to earwax impaction. Don’t attempt to remove the impaction. Go to your GP instead.
Gradual loss of hearing as you age is a common occurrence. If you are entering your senior years and you notice a decline in hearing, have yourself evaluated for presbycusis.
Meniere’s disease is another disorder involving the inner ears and its symptoms are fluctuating hearing loss, vertigo, tinnitus, and feeling of fullness. Tinnitus that is accompanied by vertigo is an indication of existing inner ear abnormality. Tumor growth in the vestibular nerve can also cause these symptoms.
If your hearing problems began after taking medications, you must be suffering from ototoxicity. Inform your doctor about it and ask for safe drug alternatives.
Ear pain with discharge is usually due to infections like otitis media or otitis externa. Have these conditions treated before they get worse.
Treatments for ear disorders vary a lot. For instance, there are available medical and alternative tinnitus treatments. It’s wise to consult an expert before attempting any treatment procedures.
