Folate Deficiency Can Cause Hearing Loss

By John On October 15, 2010 Under hearing loss

Hearing loss can be attributed to a number of factors. There are many causes of hearing loss. Earwax impaction, eardrum perforation, ear infection, and flu can cause temporary deafness. On the other hand, conditions like Meniere’s disease or ototoxicity may cause periods of hearing loss. There are also conditions that lead to permanent hearing loss. Otosclerosis and congenital defects can cause one to lose his hearing. The common cause of hearing loss today is loud noise exposure, which causes gradual decline in one’s hearing.

However, according to new research, lack of folate can lead to hearing defect. What we know is that folate is involved in the maturation of red blood cells. Thus, a deficiency in folate can lead to anemia. Pregnant mothers are required to take folate supplements because this nutrient is essential to the development of the nervous system of the fetus. Folate deficiency may be due to outright inadequate intake or malabsorption.

Some natural formulas for hearing loss include Vitamin B complex including folate, magnesium, and zinc. You can see several products advertised as hearing loss or tinnitus latest treatment and these bottles contain stuff like Gingko biloba and certain nutrients. These are actually natural products and are usually considered nutrient supplements instead of remedies.

Anyway, the lack of folate has been linked to susceptibility to age related hearing loss. If you think you are suffering from age related hearing impairment, have your hearing assessed before you start trying treatments.

Is hearing loss in old age partly caused by not enough folate being absorbed?:
