Drugs that Cause Hearing Loss
There are more than two hundred ototoxic medications. Some are prescription drugs and others are those you can directly buy at a pharmacy. Ototoxic drugs are those that affect the ears in the long run. Some people are particularly sensitive to ototoxic substances that they easily experience the symptoms, which are dizziness or vertigo, hearing loss, and ringing in the ears.
Common drugs that are regarded as ototoxic are ibuprofen and aspirin. Indeed, NSAIDs are popularly known to have ototoxic properties. Note that these drugs are frequently used by everyone, and people should know the possible dangers of prolonged dependence on these drugs. But ototoxicity is just one reason why you shouldn’t be too dependent on these drugs. Some of these medications can lead to kidney and liver problems in the long run too.
If you notice symptoms specified above, discontinue using the drug and opt for safe alternatives. If you don’t know what the safe alternatives are, go to your doctor and ask them. In a few cases, long-term use of ototoxic drugs can lead permanent hearing loss or tinnitus, which has no cure. Tinnitus treatment remedies ringing in the ears to some extent but does not correct the inner ear damage sustained after extended intake of neurotoxic drugs.
