Understanding the Symptoms of Meniere’s Disease

By John On November 11, 2010 Under Meniere's Disease

Meniere’s disease is an idiopathic inner ear disorder that is accompanied by symptoms of vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss. Scientists don’t know what causes this condition, but they think it has something to do with an increase of fluid pressure in the inner ear, particularly in the endolymphatic sacs.

According to theories the fluid endolymph leaks from its channels and flows in areas where it’s unneeded. Excess fluid can damage tissues in the inner ear, and since you find the seat of balance and hearing in the inner ears, both functions are affected. Meniere’s disease usually affects one ear, and it’s not a continuous condition. Rather symptoms come in episodes during which tinnitus, hearing loss, and vertigo increase in intensity spontaneously.

No one knows how Meniere’s disease develops and what exactly causes it. Some researchers believe that abnormalities in the blood vessel network in the ear region cause the disorder. Others think that it is a product of viral infections or autoimmune disorders. The condition runs in the families, and that’s why scientists assume there may be genetic factors involved.

There is no cure for meniere’s disease, but medications like meclizine, diazepam, glycopyrrolate, and lorazepam may be prescribed to alleviate attacks of vertigo. Patients may also be advised to limit salt intake. Diuretics may also be recommended. Alternative tinnitus treatments remedy the ringing or buzzing in ears to some degree, but doctors are in doubt about the efficacy of these procedures. Cognitive therapy may help patients on management of Meniere’s disease.
