Tinnitus is an abnormal perception of sound without peripheral source. It is always accompanied ringing and buzzing sound that irritates the ear. - Tinnitus from loud noise (cochlear damage) – prolonged exposure to loud noise causes cochlear damage. Some events such a severe head blow and head injuries; like vehicular accidents, can damage the cochlea that leads to tinnitus. This covers almost 80 to 85% of tinnitus cases.
- Tinnitus from stress – people who are always involved in stressful activities and anxiety can lead to tinnitus. While stress does not directly cause tinnitus, it can aggravate the ringing sensation louder.
- Tinnitus from sinus – one of the causes from this condition is the sinus congestion and sometimes associated with hearing loss. The mucous or polyps block the Eustachian tubes which result to pressure buildup and tinnitus. The mucous becomes viscous and unable to pass through the tiny tubes. This is normally caused from taking antihistamine and antibiotics.
Other common problems that have been identified to cause tinnitus are otosclerosis, ear infection, punctured eardrum, drugs, allergies, excessive earwax buildup, hypertension, tumor, and other metabolic health problems.
