Can Viagra Cause Hearing Problems
Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, but it may endanger your hearing, according to a study done by researchers at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. FDA wanted manufacturers to be more exact with the labeling of drugs, and this scientific research was just a response to FDA’s orders. Government has been giving warning regarding the likelihood of PDE-5i drugs, like Viagra, to cause hearing problems.
According to Gerald McGwin (an epidemiology professor at UAB’s School of Public Health), government warnings are warranted. Men taking drugs for erectile dysfunction should be aware of the negative effects of these drugs. Symptoms of hearing loss should be immediately reported to their physicians to avert possible permanent hearing damage. Anyway, the study involved more than eleven thousand men, none of whom are below 40. The study reveals that men who didn’t rely on erectile dysfunction drugs were less likely to acquire hearing impairment.
Viagra, like most ED drugs, was originally synthesized as a hypertension medication. Only after clinical trials was this drug reported to have benefits on men with ED. This drug may increase blood flow to other areas, and one of these areas could be the ears. Some experts believe that increased blood flow to the ears can lead to hearing problems. Other ED medications—Cialis and Levitra—are also known for their ototoxicity. Signs of ototoxicity are hearing loss and tinnitus.
Treatment for hearing loss and tinnitus include use of hearing aids. Tinnitus masking treatment can bring relief to the afflicted.
Discuss options with your doctor regarding ED.
