Keeping Yourself Safe from Loud Noise
Many people don’t know the dangers of standing too long beside traffic jammed streets or staying too long inside concert halls. Loud noise is everywhere, and there seems no way to avoid them. Follow these simple ways to keep your ears safe from damaging decibels.
- Know how loud is loud. The ambient noise is loud enough if you need to shout to a person 4 feet away just to be heard.
- Don’t stay too long in environments drowned in loud noise. Noise above 80 decibels is potentially damaging. Bad news is that iPods can have maximum volumes above 100 dB while music in orchestras can go up to 120 dB. Your ears can only survive for two hours at 100 dB before damage begins. It can withstand less than fifteen minutes around 120-dB noise before damage can occur.
- Protect your ears. Earplugs can filter out about 25 decibels and are thus useful in noisy environments. It’s recommended that you wear earplugs if you are running a lawn mower or working inside a noisy environment. Make sure your earplugs fit properly or the reason why you’re wearing them in the first place is forfeited.
- Keep your televisions, stereos, DVD players, and iPods at moderate volumes. Habitual listening to loud noise can lead to hearing impairment.
Loud noise can also cause tinnitus aside from hearing loss. Proven treatments for tinnitus involve techniques that include avoidance of loud noise.
