Understanding the Symptoms of Meniere’s Disease
Meniere’s disease is one of those not easily understood human disorders that have perplexed scientists. This ear problem originates in the inner ears, usually affecting one ear. The disease is accompanied by an increase in the amount of fluid in the inner ear, particularly in the cochlea. There is no clear explanation why the fluid in this region increases in amount, but as it exerts pressure on the surrounding tissues, various symptoms arise.
The increase in fluid volume may be attributed to an unknown inflammatory disease or it could be a result of an autoimmune action that occurs in the inner ears. The pressure however affects the vestibular nerve, which sends hearing and balance information from the inner ear to the brain. It causes the nerve to send wrong information to the brain. This causes balance and hearing problems, however, not on a continuous basis. Meneire’s disease usually happen in severe attacks, during which all symptoms present themselves in what could be described as debilitating paroxysms. A person would usually experience a sudden roar in his ears and then hearing loss and vertigo follows. Vertigo is usually so severe that he may need to sit down or lie down until the attack passes. In between attacks are quiet remissions, when the patient feels virtually all right, but in many cases low humming noise and mild hearing loss linger.
Symptoms of meniere’s disease can be dealt with during treatments. Homeopathic tinnitus treatment can help people on dealing with the phantom noise in their ear. Hearing aids may correct hearing in case the patient suffers from permanent hearing loss of some degree.
