Tips to Manage Ear Pain

By John On March 4, 2011 Under Ringing In Ears

Ear pain happens due to an infection or obstruction in the ears. Almost everyone has had an experience of ear ache. It is common in kids but not uncommon in adults. The usual cause of earache is otitis externa or swimmers ear, which is an infection that occurs due to left moisture inside the ear canal. But without going to a doctor there is no way you can determine what’s really causing the painful symptom and it would be impossible to get the most appropriate treatment such as an alternative tinnitus treatment.
Relieve the Pain

Before you can reach your physician, you can kill the pain by taking analgesics. They are over-the-counter remedies for pain so you shouldn’t have any difficulty looking for them.

Garlic?

A clove or two of garlic a day keeps ear pain away. Garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties, so it could eliminate infectious microorganisms inside your ears. You just have to contend with the smell.

Vinegar

White vinegar has many home remedy applications. You can try mixing diluted white vinegar and applying it to your affected ear via an eye dropper. Vinegar keeps the right pH of your ear canal, which is naturally slightly acidic. This acidity keeps harmful bacteria from proliferating. But never do this if you know you have ruptured eardrum.

Mineral Oil

Mineral oil can loosen impaction in the ear canal and can help in removal of accumulated earwax. Accumulation of cerumen causes conductive hearing loss and sometimes causes that ugly experience of ears ringing. Treatment can only be done by a doctor, so never attempt to clear your ears of impacted earwax. If you have ruptured eardrum, don’t drop in mineral oil.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is a known antiseptic which you can use to kill the germs in your ears. It is also used to prevent swimmer’s ears. Rubbing alcohol dries quickly and can be used to dry your ears after swimming. But don’t put alcohol into your ears if your eardrum is injured.

Warm Compress

Get a clean cloth and immerse it in warm water then place the warm, wet cloth over the affected ear. Apply warm compress every two hours for 15 minutes. You can use cotton balls if you don’t have available cloth. This should improve the blood flow to your ears.

Sit Up

You will notice that lying down makes the ear pain worse. If that’s the case, sit up and keep your head high if you should recline.
