Causes of Ear Ringing

Educating yourself about the causes of ear ringing is one way of putting yourself in an advantage. For one, if you are a sufferer of the condition, it will help you and your physician determine the root cause of the unwanted sound. And, if the root cause is determined, it would be less difficult for you to find the right treatment. If you are non-sufferer, on the other hand, this knowledge will help you in taking measures to prevent yourself from having to experience the unwanted sound.

Generally, the causes of ear ringing or tinnitus are medical conditions. Thus, while it is not life-threatening in itself because it is only a symptom, it can have serious implications and serious effects as well. Presbycusis or age-associated hearing loss, middle ear infections, head and neck injuries, thyroid disorder, vitamin B12 deficiency, high blood pressure, malformation of the capillaries, and atherosclerosis are some of the medical conditions that cause tinnitis.

There are main causes, though, and these are:

  • noise-induced cochlear damage, which is the most common cause; 90% of the cases of ringing in the ears have this condition as the root cause;
  • stress, which impedes with the function of the hypothalamus in the production of the chemicals that the body needs in order to work normally; when these essential chemicals are not produced, unhealthy conditions take place, one of which is tinnitus;
  • sinusitis or allergies, which are usually treated by taking medications like antibiotics and antihistamines; these medications thicken the mucous in the middle ear, pressure buildup takes place, further resulting to middle ear infections and ringing ears; and
  • Meniere’s Disease, a chronic disorder in the inner ear, which is marked by vertigo attacks, hearing fluctuations, and ringing in the ears.

While most of the treatments for ringing ears are focused on the symptoms, there are ones that focus on what caused the unwanted sound. These are known as homeopathic tinnitus remedies, which belong to the realm of alternative medicine. There is a homeopathic remedy for each of the main causes of ear ringing, and known to be holistic in approach and “heals the body from within”.

It is also important that you manage the effects of the haunting noise, especially stress and immune system suppression. The use of white noise maskers, counseling, meditation, and relaxation therapy are some of the treatments that help manage and control stress. On the other hand, an immune boost formula, together with a proper diet, regular and proper exercise, and enough sleep definitely help boost the immune system.
