Steps in Coping with Tinnitus Symptoms

By John On April 27, 2011 Under Tinnitus Relief

Although tinnitus is not a disorder on its own, it can cause distress to many sufferers. The condition is described by many as perception of ringing or whistling noise inside one of their ears. Tinnitus symptoms, however, can vary from patient to patient, with some people reporting hearing low, rumbling noise. Whatever the type of noise is, tinnitus or ringing in the ears describes a condition in which a person hears strange noise that does not originate from an external source.

It is usually called ringing in the ears, and it affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. It varies from mild to severe, but most sufferers suffer from mild to moderate forms of the condition. The majority of cases involve just one hear—unilateral tinnitus. Hearing of phantom noise in the ears is a tough experience. It disrupts work and impairs sleep, although many patients live with tinnitus without suffering from major consequences or health issues.

These are some of the things you can do to address your tinnitus symptoms:

1. Relax – Although it may seem hard to relax in quiet room when your ear is ringing, relaxation is important for people in many ways. First, it lowers blood pressure and brings down activity of overactive neurons in the brain. Breathing exercises done as part of many relaxation techniques can bring more oxygen in the inner ears. All these benefit your hearing and help you alleviate tinnitus. Keep in mind, though, that relaxation therapy does not cure tinnitus.

2. Use natural remedies – There is no conventional medicine that would work for tinnitus. Your doctor may prescribe certain anti-anxiety medications, but these cannot work for your condition. There are different herbal supplements and homeopathic remedies that work to reduce the intrusiveness of ringing in your ears. You can also find a natural tinnitus healing through vitamin supplements by helping you improve your immunity. An enhanced immune system raises your defenses against stress, which worsens your tinnitus.

3. Stay away from noise – Loud noise can cause more damage to your inner ears than you previously know. It is believed that tinnitus is due to destruction of the delicate tissues inside the inner ears. This damage is often due to noise exposure, so if you want to forestall further damage, you have to protect your ears from harmful sound levels. You can wear earplugs or earmuffs whenever you use noise-generating equipment. Ear protectors are even more important for people working at noisy environments.

4. Stop thinking too much about your tinnitus – Most patients have learned to live with ear ringing. After all, it is a benign condition, so you really don’t need intensive treatment, unless you experience so much trouble. People who need medical intervention are those suffering from anxiety, depression, and insomnia due to tinnitus. They may be advised to go through a systematic therapy.

5. Go to your audiologist – You may think that it’s unnecessary to go to your doctor, but it’s a wise option. Tinnitus may be a sign of a developing hearing loss. A hearing assessment pins down if you suffer from some form of hearing impairment. An audiologist has more thorough knowledge about tinnitus symptoms and he can give you the right advice on tinnitus and the classic tinnitus cycle more than other professionals. Nevertheless, even the best audiologist does not have the cure.
