What Causes Stress

By Jane On December 4, 2008 Under Ringing In Ears, Tinnitus & Related Blogs, Tinnitus Articles

What causes stress to you may be not applicable for me as people have different levels of coping abilities.  While there are people who get stressed when required to stand before a big crowd, there are people who enjoy doing it.

There are situations that commonly cause stress though. These include:

  • death in the family
  • illness
  • conflicts relating to personal relationships
  • finances
  • environment change (school, workplace, city)
  • disasters (fire, typhoon, etc.)
  • poor health habits
  • unrealistic expectations

What many people do not know is that stress can cause tinnitus or ringing in the ears, and it can itself aggravate tinnitus. This may seem a little far out because when we think of tinitus, we usually think of problems that have something to do with the ears.

The thing is when you are subjected to prolonged stress is that the hypothalamus gets negatively affected. The hypothalamus is a primitive part of the brain that plays a vital role in the production of essential chemicals that the body requires in order to function properly. But, its exposure to prolonged stress can hinder it from doing its job in the production of those essential chemicals. As a result, certain unhealthy conditions arise, and one of these is ear ringing.

Apparently, being in stressful situations is inevitable. But, we should find ways to manage stress if we do not want it to affect us rather negatively and let it take control of our lives. Keep an open communication with the people in your immediate environment, talk to somebody about your frustrations and how you are feeling. Writing down your feelings and keeping yourself busy can also help.

Furthermore, counseling, hypnotherapy, meditation, relaxation therapy, and white noise maskers have worked for many.

The best weapon you have, however, is to know yourself and each of the things that stresses you. For instance, if you know that you get stressed thinking of the argument that you have had with your partner, keep yourself busy. Walk your dog around the neighborhood, read a book, or anything that would relax you and make you stop pouring your thoughts over the argument.

One thing that should be known to many, though, is that what causes stress is not always negative. There are stressors that keep us on our toes and make us more motivated. An upcoming examination, for instance, stresses you in the sense that it makes you study your lessons and be productive and not just lie down and watch T.V.
