Steps in Identifying the Cause of Tinnitus: What Does Ringing in the Ears Mean?

By John On June 3, 2011 Under tinnitus cure

For those who experience tinnitus or the incessant noise in the ears, it is essential to know that tinnitus is not an actual disease but rather a symptom or an indication that you are suffering from some kinds of diseases. That is basically the reason why it is imperative to identify what causes ringing in the ears for it to be given the right treatment. Remember that not all of the tinnitus causing diseases is mild; some of them can be really severe. Knowing what does ringing in the ears mean and treating its cause properly will not only help you get rid of your tinnitus but will also help you avoid other complications that may come with that disease.

These are the basic steps that you should take to identify the cause of your tinnitus:

1. Thorough physical examination – when you visit your physician, you will undergo a preliminary examination. You will be asked about your health history including hereditary diseases such as hypertension that you might be able to acquire.

2. Hearing Examination or Audiometry – tinnitus can be caused by several ear problems such as hearing loss, Meniere’s Disease, ear infections and many others. Hearing tests can help identify which of these ear problems is causing your ears to ring.

3. Imaging Tests – X-rays, MRI and CT scans may be recommended once your doctor suspects that problems like tumors are causing your tinnitus.

Apart from these tests, additional tests such as tinnitus pitch match, tinnitus loudness match, residual inhibition and maskability of tinnitus may also be done not only to know what causes your tinnitus but also to find the right tinnitus remedy to stop the annoying noise that tinnitus brings.
