Many of us might have experienced a certain kind of noise in one or both ears. Usually, this noise simply goes away. However, there is a kind of ear condition wherein this noise stays for days and months and even years. This ear condition is called tinnitus. At the moment, there are about 50 million people in America alone who suffer from this ear condition. Apart from the fact that there is no definitive ringing ears cure, what makes it even more troubling is that it is not considered a disease but only an indication of an underlying medical problem. For instance, tinnitus or ringing in the ears and allergies has a very strong link. Once you experience the symptoms of tinnitus, it is very important to consult your doctor and find out what really causes your ears to ring.

Here are some of the things that you must undergo to determine the cause of your tinnitus.

1. Physical examination – once you visit your doctor, you will have to undergo a thorough physical examination and this will include checking your medical history. There are some causes of tinnitus that can actually be predicted by other symptoms that a particular disease physically manifests. You will also have to know the kinds of hereditary diseases that could have been passed on to you as such hearing loss.

2. Audiometry or hearing test – this is very important because there several ear diseases that can cause tinnitus including Meniere’s disease, hearing loss and ear infection. By having a hearing test, your physician may be able to identify whether the cause of your tinnitus is some kind of an ear problem.

3. Imaging tests – this includes X-rays, MRI and CT scans. These tests may be recommended if your doctor suspects that the ringing in your ears is caused by a structural abnormality in your body. For instance, ear tumor or Acoustic Neuroma actually creates the tinnitus noise.

Although you may be able to find a tinnitus relief, you should be able to find out the real cause of your tinnitus and treat it if you want to completely get rid of the noise in your ears.
