Common Ear Problems Explained

By John On August 2, 2011 Under hearing loss

We humans are very lucky that we are blessed with different senses that aid is in our day to day living. These senses enable us to learn, explore, appreciate and manipulate the wonderful world that surrounds us today. Of the five senses that humans possess, the sense of hearing is perhaps the least appreciated. Many people don’t realize that our ears are not only responsible for making us hear different sounds but also helps us in maintaining our balance while standing or walking. Because of the significant changes that are happening in our society today, a lot of individuals are put at greater risk in contracting various ear-related illnesses that will not only ruin our normal lives but also put us in a state of danger and uncertainty. In order to fully understand these risks, we need to first be aware of the different ear problems that are mercilessly plaguing our society today.

Hearing Loss

When it comes to problems that directly concern the ear, hearing loss is perhaps considered the most common. In fact, hearing impairment is almost perfectly synonymous to aging. When people grow old, their body also weakens and certain bodily organs may lose their ability to function normally. It is estimated that about 90% of the population will encounter any degree of hearing loss over the course of their lives. And while aging is taught to be the main culprit of such an unlikable situation, other ear-related illnesses such as Tinnitus can also contribute to hearing problems. Also, frequent exposure to loud noises can kill the different tissues found inside our ears that are responsible for capturing and interpreting sound. These dead tissues cannot be easily replaced and will most likely need surgery to implement a repair. It is helpful to know that excessive buildup of ear wax can also cause hearing loss.

Ear Problems

Ear Infections

Because our ears are exposed to the external environment, it too can be a target for a bacterial or fungal attack. Ear infections are very much common and are usually caused by viral infections. These viruses can wreak havoc inside your ears that you can experience severe pain, swelling or even temporary hearing loss. Although it can occur to anyone regardless of age and gender, young children are believed to be more vulnerable to this medical condition. It is worthy to note that several illnesses such as coughs, colds and other upper respiratory-related sickness that are left untreated for a long time can also cause infection to the ears. Bacteria can easily travel to nearby body organs and start infecting them. The pain can last for a couple of days and will eventually fade. For a temporary relief, pain killers can be administered to ease the pain.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is constant ringing of the ears which originated from the inner ear rather than from external sources. This wild ringing is a result of an underlying problem that is being suffered by an individual. It is usually caused by tissue damage within the ear canal. In other cases, the noises are produced by body pulses due to certain diseases. Those who suffer from this medical condition struggle to sleep properly and are unable to achieve full concentration due the different noises that bombard the sufferer. While this disorder is more common with adults and those who reach their later years, anyone is still at risk. One of the reasons why a lot of people really hate this disorder is the fact it has no common cure or no single remedy. In order to successfully treat Tinnitus, one needs to first find and identify the root cause.

Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s disease is one of the most serious of all ear problems that we humans could possibly encounter. It is a medical condition in which there is an excess of fluid in either ear. The excess fluid disturbs the ear’s natural balance which then triggers an array of underlying symptoms. The most common symptom is the abnormal feeling of fullness or heaviness in one of the ears. The sufferer may also experience hearing loss accompanied with wild and unexplained noises in the ear (Tinnitus). Attacks of vertigo may also be encountered at a timely basis. During this period, the sufferer will suffer from severe dizziness which results in vomiting and nausea. Motion sickness will then make him/her feel continuous motion despite not moving at all. Although not as common as Tinnitus, Meniere’s disease is still a dangerous disease that one should definitely avoid off.

There are many more diseases and medical conditions out there that can threaten our sense of hearing. It is very important to be aware with each one of them as they not only affect your health but your lifestyle as well. By taking the necessary measures to avoid these diseases, we significantly minimize the risk of contracting ear problems. Taking care of your ears can give you numerous benefits and can make you stay away from trouble.
