The Problems of Hearing Loss for Baby Boomers and Solutions

A survey conducted by The EAR Foundation and Clarity projects that hearing loss has become one of the important health issues for the Baby Boomers. The survey indicates that nearly half of the 76 million than Baby Boomers in the U.S. are suffering from different level of hearing loss.

The ratio of hearing loss among men and women Baby Boomers is 62% for men to 38 for women. The hearing loss greatly affects the quality of life whether at home or at work.

There are many reasons why baby boomers are considered the first generation to experience hearing loss. Earlier, hearing loss was linked with age, but now the signs can be seen in people in their 40s or 50s. Baby boomers are the first generation to experience the electronically amplified sound that can be linked to their youth, when they listened to music. The studies have clearly proved that extended exposure to loudly amplified music can result in permanent hearing loss. Baby boomers are also the first to be exposed to different electric like blenders/mixers, lawn mowers, which too can result in hearing loss.

One kind of hearing loss is known as tinnitus. The symptoms of tinnitus are ringing in the ears or muffled sound. In order to understand tinnitus, it is necessary to know how we hear sounds through our ears. The eardrums inside our ears vibrate when sound waves in air affect it. The sound waves reach the liquid-filled inner ear by passing through the middle ear space and the tiny ear bones. The sound that we, in effect hear, is the oscillations created in the liquid.

The brain of a person suffering from tinnitus hears interrupted sounds. Due to the malfunction, the brain accepts the messages mixed with some outer sound.

The main cause of tinnitus, ear ringing, is body toxins that builds up and become evident in older age, generally after 30. The body toxins then may result not only in partial hearing loss but also headaches and depression.

Tinnitus treatment is as follows:
Tinnitus Retraining
This method was discovered by a neuroscientist Pawel Jastreboff in the 1980s.

Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can be effective for tinnitus because stress may be one of the causes of the disease.
Herbal Treatments
Boil one cup of dill seeds in 1/2 gallon (2 litters) of water. Set them aside overnight. Drink two tablespoons of the syrup three times a day for two months. The syrup cleanses the blood vessels and ends the ringing in your ears.
