Symptoms of Ringing in Ears: Jane’s Story

By Fritz On July 16, 2009 Under Tinnitus Articles

There is no cure for tinnitus. That’s what my doctor told me, on my second visit to her clinic after bouts of ear splitting noise. Symptoms of ringing in ears came so suddenly. I woke up one morning with the unusual fullness in my ears, muffled sounds around and the ringing. I didn’t know what was wrong. I was perfectly doing well the previous day.

I went through some tests. X-rays and audiograms were ordered which pointed some damage in my inner ear. There were also tinnitus pitch matching and tinnitus loudness matching tests.

The cause of my tinnitus remains unidentified up to now. Perhaps it was one of those screeching of vehicle horns in the highway, or the loud blast of loud speakers at home. Maybe anxiety and stress at work might have been the culprits. No one could really figure out, and I have exhausted enough energy trying to find out what gives rise to the symptoms of ringing in ears.

Now I am constantly aware of what to avoid. I steer clear from loud noises. My ear plugs are with me, so I can still enjoy disco nights with my friends. I keep checking the over-all volume at home, making sure the stereos are never tuned at high volumes.

There are times when I don’t hear the sound at all, but there are times when it rings suddenly, and when it does, it’s particularly alarming. Just imagine what you feel when a phone suddenly rings loud. I was told to not react negatively when this occurs so as not to produce anxiety attacks that could worsen the tinnitus.

Relaxation, according to a yoga expert I went to, is important whether or not you have tinnitus. It retrains you to breathe the right way and calm the nerves. According to some study, the over active nerves have something to do with your perceiving of ear noises.

Good diet is something one with tinnitus should watch for and follow, because such ear problem may be related to nutritional deficiencies. It sounds peculiar, but I have read about vitamin and mineral deficiencies that lead to hearing problems like the ones I am going through.

When I am at home, I usually wear a tinnitus instrument that combines a masker and a hearing aid.  When I find this quite bothersome, I just play nice music on my CD player.

I no longer dwell on bad feelings about myself. I don’t self pity and I do not bother to find out what is causing my tinnitus.  Perhaps, my coping mechanism is better than anybody else’s. I’m a happy, cheerful woman. I have my family and kids. I see no reason to fret at all, even if symptoms of ringing ears often hover around me.
