Enhanced Safety for Rear-end Collisions
Headrest extension protects against whiplash injuries
Hanover, March 2006
The traffic light turns red, tires squeal, and then there is the dull thud of an impact. The driver let his attention stray for just a second – and ran into the car up ahead. According to ADAC statistics, about 100,000 rear-end collisions end in injuries each year in Germany. Because of the relatively low speeds involved in rear-end collisions, the number of serious injuries is limited, but crash victims often suffer from head aches and neck pain, dizziness, tinnitus and depression for a long time afterwards.
TINNITUS TREATMENT INFORMATION & ADVICE
The most common diagnosis is whiplash. Motorists can best protect themselves from such injuries with the ContiCuraPlus headrest extension. ContiTech AG cooperated with the ENT specialist Dr. Lutz Osterwald from Hanover to develop the add-on cushion.
In the event of a rear-end collision, the extension (left) quickly cushions the head. Headrests are often positioned too far back (right), increasing the risk of whiplash injuries considerably.
Dr. Osterwald explains: “The headrests in many cars are positioned too far back and too low, so the gap between the head and the headrest is much too large. This is a safety problem, especially for tall persons.” Even if the standard headrest is moved forward, it still provides little protection. “Many headrests snap back immediately in a rear-end collision, so they provide no support”, criticizes the physician. The Conti cushion fills this safety gap. In the event of a rear-end collision, the soft extension quickly cushions the head. Ligaments and tendons are not hyperextended, and the vertebrae and discs are not bent excessively.
The ContiCuraPlus headrest extension thus provides effective protection against the painful consequences of a rear-end collision. After testing the safety of car seats and headrests, the ADAC has come to the same conclusion as well. “The headrest extension improved the protection of the cervical spine by one whole test ranking. It is especially recommended for cars where the standard headrest is too far away from the head”, says Maximilian Maurer, spokesman and technical editor at ADAC. The cushion fits on nearly all standard headrests and can be mounted quickly and easily. It has been tested by the North German Technical Safety Inspection Agency (TÜV) and bears the safety seal of the Swiss Counselling Center for Accident Prevention (BfU).
