Explaining Tinnitus to Your Family

By John On July 5, 2009 No Comments

Talking with your family about tinnitus is stressful for both you and them. How do you do it well, the first time? The first thing to do is to have a good understanding of tinnitus yourself. Know what caused it, what the ringing is from and what treatment options you have. This allows you to answer any questions quickly.

Tell Who You Want To

One of the first important realizations is that this condition is one you do not have to tell everyone if you do not want to. Your immediate family should probably know, so they know what to do, and what not to do around you. At the same time, there may not be a reason to tell everyone about it, especially if your hearing level is acceptable or if a hearing aid is able to improve it.

What about those who you have to tell, how do you do it?

•    Sit down with family and talk about your recent experiences. Tell them about the ringing in your ear.

•    Share with them what this has done to you. For example, explain that the ringing is not minor and does not go away leaving your hearing lacking.

•    Explain what the condition is and what doctors have told you. You can mention the causes if you would like to. Sometimes, you do not have to as you can assume they will go home to learn about it themselves.

•    Assure them there is no risk to your overall health.

•    Answer their questions but let them know you may not have all the answers they are looking for.

Tell them as much or as little as you would like to. Those who love you will understand if you are short with them or otherwise unable to give them more information.

The Way They Treat You

For some, it is not telling the family that is the problem, but rather it is the questions and the looks. You may not want them to treat you any differently. How can you handle this?

•    Inform your family that you are not changing the way you live life. They do not have to either.

•    Give them ways to help you, such as avoiding loud noise. This way, they feel like they are doing something for you.

•    Tell them how you are handling your condition. Tell them about treatments, holistic methods of healing you are using and lifestyle changes you are making.

Bringing your family together is important to your well-being, too, not just their understanding of tinnitus. Evidence shows, those who have a strong emotional support group do better with symptoms from tinnitus than those who do not. The stress relief, frustration and the ability to cope improve greatly.

Your family and friends can help you. They can be part of the lifestyle changes you make such as eating a healthy diet and getting more exercise. They can work with you to find the natural treatments for tinnitus, too.

Cure for Ringing Ears

By Jane On April 7, 2009 No Comments

A ringing ear that is constant may be an endless torture for a person having the problem. There are in fact some who were unable to cope with their condition that they even committed suicide. The question is, did you ever think you can find a cure for ringing ears, even if your physician has told you there is no hope to find a cure for it? A ringing in ears is a symptom and each case has a different cause, thus there is no single pill which can eliminate a ringing in the ear for all cases of tinnitus.

It’s not the end of the world if you have ringing in ears; you just need to keep in mind a few things:

· Do not believe your doctor if they tell you it cannot be cured. Most doctors would instill this impression to their patients that a cure for ringing ears is impossible. Unfortunately, even doctors themselves are not aware or do not care about of the psychological effects of tinnitus. Physicians who would still tell their patients that nothing can be done about ringing in ears just do not know the right information.

· A persons coping mechanism does not lessen the volume of the noise but it may help a person in coping up with the irritating ringing in ears. The volume of the noise may intensify but the way a person reacts or gets affected with the noise depends a lot on his or her coping mechanism. Some may be able to react fairly well at the start and have a worse reaction after several years.

· Not everyone with a hearing damage will hear a ringing in ears. This is best explained by disparities with each person’s lifestyle. Such disparities may also be a big factor for a ringing in ears. There are foods that have high salicylate content (broccoli and strawberries) and aggravate a ringing in ears.

· Stress not only causes tinnitus but can also worsen the ringing in the ears. While searching for something that can be your cure for ringing ears, anxiety and stress may become a very big problem that it is important to learn from those who have experienced a ringing in the ears and ask them how they were able to cope with their ringing in the ears and why they are able to live life comfortably.

TINNITUS – THE UNPAID SINGER

By jeffreyb On March 23, 2009 No Comments

TINNITUS – THE UNPAID SINGER

You hear some good music and find the experience out of the world. The music lingers in your mind even after the event is over and you enjoy the sensation for some time. Imagine the same crooning goes on and on in your ears for days together, how would you feel? You will want to shrug it off and keep your ears totally sound-free. That is what tinnitus does to us. There was always continuous ringing sound which can affect you orientation and obstruct you from hearing other sounds around you properly. It can be devastating.

Tinnitus is known to affect older people normally, but when the youngsters are exposed to certain abnormal conditions like continuous loud noise, or such sounds which are way higher than normal decibels, certain sudden injury to the brain or the ears themselves, or certain medicines, could damage the ears and lead to tinnitus. A definitive cause for tinnitus is yet to be found. Sometimes, tinnitus could be accompanied by hearing loss too, in which case a hearing aid might prove somewhat useful. Measures like tinnitus retraining therapy, that is, psychologically training the patients to learn to live with the sound are being tried. Tinnitus masking therapies are also being tried on the patients, which should suppress the ringing sound. But the doctors fear that if the patients get used to masking, it might to lead to their heavy dependence on it and they may not learn to live with tinnitus.

In any case one must consult a specialist, if one has been experiencing such ringing sound continuously, even in the absence of any such external sounds. According to the specialists, immediate measures to be taken by the patients would be to avoid loud noises, monitor blood pressure, reduce salt in diet, and avoid caffeinated beverages, good exercise and enough rest for he body and brain. Patients have to cooperate and tinnitus can be self-managed to some extent.
