Pulsatile Objective Tinnitus

By julius On December 18, 2008 No Comments

Tinnitus is the perception of ringing sound in the ear without a source. It may spring from various causes such as diabetes, high blood pressure, allergies, stress. The sound of tinnitus varies from person to person. It can be a temporary or permanent ringing in ears that you have to live for the rest of you life.

In the case of pulsatile objective tinnitus, a person can hear beating noise in the ear similar to his or her heartbeat. The noise can be a single or multiple beats. This is not a common type of tinnitus which can be treated effectively. Other people can also hear the beats from the ear using a stethoscope or other modern medical equipment.

Objective tinnitus could be a result of malformation of the arteries and veins located in the head or neck which may sometimes require surgery to resolve the problem. Such expensive and risky procedures that even a simple error can lead to a more severe hearing problem or deafness.

There are medical conditions that are related to pulsatile tinnitus. This include:

  • Arterioevenous shunts
  • Vascular Abnormalities
  • Congenital arteriovenous malformation
  • Glomus tumors of the jugular
  • Glomus tumors of the tympanicum
  • Mechanical Abnormalities
  • Patulous Eustachian tubes

In order to determine the root cause of the problem, some testing procedures may be undertaken such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) ultrasound, CT scan and other possible testing measures. Soon as the cause of the problem is ruled out, it would be easier to direct tinnitus.

Furthermore, the basic tinnitus treatment depends on the symptoms and causes of the unwanted noise. If the pulsating in ears is caused by hypertension, controlling the blood pressure to its normal level will resolve the problem. An appropriate medication should be carefully supervised as the risk of stroke or death is possible.

Aside from drug medication, there are also alternative and natural yet effective tinnitus treatments that can be employed. Cardiovascular exercise and diet are also other forms of treatment.

Pulse In Ear

By julius On December 18, 2008 No Comments

Most people can hear their heartbeats especially in a very silent room.  Because our ears are very sensitive, for that reason the ear is able to sense pulse from our bodies. When the person is over stressed or engaged in stressful activity, they may also hear pulse in ear synchronized with their own heartbeat since our carotid arteries are close to the ears.

The sound of pulse to be heard in your ears is known as pulsating or vascular tinnitus. Generally, tinnitus is the ringing, hissing or roaring in the ears. It can also be heard as pulse or throbbing sound in the ear or head. The main possible causes of hearing pulsating tinnitus include:

  • Chronic inflammation or infection of the middle ear. This is often accompanied by increased blood flow to the inflamed tissue. The sudden pressure or blood flow can sometimes be heard in the ear  like pulse or multiple beats.
  • Eustachian-tube dysfunction. The Eustachian tubes linked the middle ears to the upper throat. They work like an air valve to equalize the era pressure both in the inner and the outer ear. Failure of the Eustachian tubes to function well sometimes result in pulsating tinnitus.
  • Middle-ear effusion (fluid). The middle ear is usually an air-filled space. If there is a presence of infection, inflammation or dysfunction in the Eustachian tubes, this may also result to pulsatile tinnitus. The symptoms commonly experienced from this cause are decreased hearing, a feeling of pressure in the ear sometimes go along with ear pain.
  • Vascular tumors. These tumors in the middle are benign types commonly referred to as “glomus” tumors or “paragangliomas.”. Since they are located in near or inside the ear, the abnormal blood flow can also cause hearing of pulse in ears. Usually a patient will undergo surgical procedures solve the problem.

There are other causes of vascular tinnitus not mentioned in this article. It is therefore advised for the sufferer to see an ENT specialist for further evaluation of such to prevent tinnitus and other ear problems to get worse. The ruling out of the possible causes of the pulsation in the ears can help in finding an effective tinnitus remedy for the condition.

Ringing Ear

By julius On December 10, 2008 No Comments

Having to experience a ringing ear or hearing many other phantom sounds that only you can hear is what is medically called as tinnitus. Different people hear different things such as ringing, buzzing, beating or some other more complex sounds.

Tinnitus is a hearing disorder that gives off a sensation that you are hearing a certain kind of sound even when there is no external sound happening. The intensity and its occurrence varies for some people. Most people complain of having to feel pain and discomfort together with the irritating sounds they hear. However, there are also some people who seem to have a higher tolerance to the tinnitus effects.

There are many causes and explanations as to why tinnitus happens to both young and old people. One of which is the occurrence of an infection in the inner ear. The infection can be brought about by many other several factors. Extreme exposure to high level noises can cause for the small tiny hairs in our ear canal to be damaged. Also, an obstruction in the ear canal due to the build up of ear wax can also be a cause of inflammation which leads to infection and further on to tinnitus.

It is important to bear in mind that tinnitus in itself is not a disease. It is a symptom of a disease or a medical condition. For example, Meniere’s disease is a condition wherein the sufferer experiences dizziness, vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus. In this case, tinnitus is just one symptom that makes up the whole disease.

Another cause for tinnitus is the case of high blood pressure. When there is an increased flow of blood through our veins and arteries, the walls of certain veins near our auditory nerves expands. This leads to pulsatile tinnitus wherein we get to feel or hear our pulse or a beat in our ears.

There is no known cure for tinnitus yet. However, there are many therapies, remedies and tinnitus treatments that can help people cope up with its effects. Using hearing aids, tinnitus maskers and homeopathic tinnitus treatments can be of great help in making tinnitus patients relax, calm down and eventually ignore the tinnitus sounds.

Hearing Heartbeat in Ears

By julius On December 9, 2008 No Comments

Tinnitus has been a more common hearing disorder nowadays. People, both old and young have had some sense of experience or information regarding such. The sensation of having to feel a constant sound like that or a ringing in the ears or a beating perhaps would definitely cause great distraction to anyone of any age.

Imagine having to hear a sound that only you can hear. That is probably one of the most annoying things that could probably happen to you. Tinnitus is not only limited to just one kind of sound being heard. The sounds varies, some may be of a ringing or a wheezing sound. Some have a constant and rhythmic beating sound. Many people may have encountered the sensation of hearing heartbeat in ears. This specific kind of sound, a beating sound, is more commonly referred to as pulsatile tinnitus.

As what the name implies, pulsatile, having something to do with the pulse, clearly involves the beating of the heart. Some people would often jump to conclusions or somehow think that there must be something wrong with the heart or the brain for that matter. Well, pulsatile tinnitus has numerous different causes. One of which includes the veins and arteries. Arteriovenous malformations or AVMs are abnormal collections of arteries and veins. Some of these veins are somehow located near the auditory nerve. That is why when the blood flows through, the pulse beats against the auditory nerve, thus giving off the sense of being able to hear the beat of your heart inside your ear.

Another probable explanation of hearing heartbeat in you ears would be of a middle ear infection. The middle ear is usually filled with air. If an infection happens, or the ear gets inflamed, then fluid build up in the middle ear. This leads on to pulsatile tinnitus.

Because of the discomfort, pain and unease brought about by this disorder, it is possible that many other disturbing effects can happen to a person suffering this kind of tinnitus. Stress, depression and pain are one of the few things that are likely to happen to a person with tinnitus. Therefore it is recommended that proper medical attention should be taken and also correct tinnitus treatment or remedies be administered.

What Is Tinnitus?

By julius On November 12, 2008 No Comments

Tinnitus is a fairly common problem experienced by many people although occurrence of this is more recurrent in old age than in the younger generation. However, individuals who are often exposed to loud noises can develop tinnitus even at a young age. So what is tinnitus? Is it a congenital condition, a hereditary irregularity, or a problem acquired with the passing of time?

Tinnitus is characterized by ringing, buzzing, hissing, humming, whistling, or other similar sound sensations with apparently no external source. It is sometimes referred to as “ringing in the ears”. Tinnitus noises are often described by the patients as irritating and unsettling sound sensations. These noises may also vary from individual to individual in its occurrence, which may be incessant or sporadic.

Pulsatile tinnitus – This is a rhythmical sound sensation that beats in time with your pulse. It is an atypical type of tinnitus and it can be caused by hypertension, malformation of a vein or an artery, or heart murmur. Pulsatile tinnitus is also known as objective tinnitus.

Nonpulsatile tinnitus – This is the more common type of tinnitus which is an annoyance rather than an acute medical problem for many people. Also termed as subjective tinnitus, this can be caused by disorders in the auditory nerves and the noises are perceived by the patient alone.

The accurate cause of tinnitus has not been fully identified by medical science yet. Nevertheless, it can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition such as an acute ear infection, blocked ear passage, or Meniere’s disease. In some cases, tinnitus can also be an indication of a tumor in one of the nerves in the ear. It is therefore advisable that a person who has tinnitus to visit a specialist and have his affected ear or both of his ears checked. Finding out more about the condition will cause less worry and prove less stressful.

Many people with tinnitus problems are able to tune it out and function normally. But it is still recommended that a visit to a specialist is best since the cause of tinnitus is still not fully understood and may only be a symptom of a more serious medical disorder. Treatment options are based, in large part, to the cause of the problem and the extent it affects the individual.

There are available medications as well as homeopathic tinnitus treatment and cures available in the market to relieve from the condition. Surgery may also be an option if the doctor prescribes it. However, before taking any medication, care must be taken since these may have undesirable results.
