Learning What Causes Ringing in the Ears

By Jane On November 20, 2008 No Comments

Knowing what causes ringing in the ears is of very important. In fact, this is the main goal of people searching anything about tinnitus over the net. Normal assessment would imply that ringing in the ears or more commonly known as tinnitus are caused by problems in the neck, head, or the ears. Experts can attest that most, if not all, cases of tinnitus occur in the ears.

One of the most common and simplest reasons why such conditions occur is the impacted earwax. Earwax accumulates within the ears and may vary on its amount and color. It does not have to be removed, but when deposited at large amounts, it can lead to hearing loss and ringing in the ears. An irrigation of the external auditory canal may solve the problem. But this should only be done by a physician.

Infections in the ear may also trigger the buzzing sounds in the ears. This condition results to inflammation of the inner ear, which may bring about severe pain, marked tinnitus, or even deafness. The early administration of antibiotics is usually required.

Certain medications can also trigger tinnitus. These drugs are commonly known as ototoxic or those that can harm the inner ear, hence, instigating hearing loss or ringing in the ears. Because of their harmful effects, they can also affect the normal balance of the body or may bring about dizziness or vertigo. About 200 medicines are considered ototoxic. It is important that you know what medicines belong to this group. If ever your current medicines cause ringing in the ears, you must advise your doctor immediately. Never decide to stop it without your doctor’s knowledge or permission. It may hasten the treatment of your disease.

Extremely loud sound or noise can also cause tinnitus. In fact, noise is considered as one of the waste products of the current century. Hence, if we will not protect our ears, it can lead to deafness. Keep in mind that our ears can only tolerate sounds below 80 decibels. Any sound higher than that can result to progressive ringing in the ears or temporary hearing loss. When left unattended, it may lead to complete deafness.
Boiled down, hearing loss is the main cause of tinnitus. Anything can bring about hearing loss. You can acquire it from work, in the environment, or from simple negligence related to caring for the ears. And, most often than not, hearing loss cases are always associated with tinnitus.

And so, it is important not to disregard any condition affecting the head or the neck as this may trigger more serious problems including tinnitus. Keep in mind that no matter what causes ringing in the ears, it is important to seek medical help always. Whenever you experience something not normal, have a physician checked it immediately.

Know What Meniere’s Disease Is Once and For All

By Fritz On November 19, 2008 No Comments

In Meniere’s disease, the inner ear has been damaged by an infection, a head injury, or some other problem.  This causes excess fluid to accumulate in the inner ear, causing severe dizziness.  The most common manifestation of this disease is the occurrence of tinnitus or ringing in the ears.  Infections like this can cause damage to the nerves located in the ears.

There are many other telltale signs of this condition.  Aside from ringing in the ears, experts say that a person with this disease can also experience sudden, violent attacks of dizziness lasting from minutes to hours, and these attacks occur in groups.

These conditions can be tolerable up to some point but can very irritating once they occur at regular sessions. The main point here is to learn how to manage the circumstances once you have the disease.

Here’s how:

1. Tinnitus

Ringing in the ears or tinnitus may range from mild to moderate conditions. However, some people suffer from extreme situations especially if it is caused by more severe cases like Meniere’s disease.
To avoid such situation, you must learn to identify the causes. Keep your ears dry all the time. Excessive moisture can cause bacterial growth in the ears, which in turn will lead to infection. Infection damages the ears.

At some point, this disease can also be caused by changes in fluid volume inside the inner ear commonly known as the labyrinth. Ruptures from the labyrinth’s membrane may trigger mixture of endolymph, a fluid found in the membranous labyrinth that is responsible for balance and hearing, and perilymph, also a fluid located between the spaces of the bony inner ear and the membranous labyrinth.

2. Dizziness

Dizziness is one of the most common symptoms of the disease.  It can go from mild to severe condition. But there is a simple way to partially help ease the dizziness: restrict the sodium or salt in your diet. Experts say that salt has what is called an osmotic effect.  It pulls water into any compartment.  By restricting the salt in the diet, less fluid might build up in the inner ear.

How long do you have to go? Experts advise Meniere’s patients to get no more than 1,500 milligrams of salt a day.

If you neglect these symptoms of Meniere’s disease, chances are you will suffer from permanent hearing loss. So as early as now, take some preventive measures or at least manage the conditions accompanying this disease.

Throbbing Sound In Your Right Ear

By julius On November 14, 2008 No Comments

A click, a pulse, or a continuous beat in your ear might come off as something terribly serious. Especially when such sensation of hearing different sounds is accompanied by pain. First and foremost, bear in mind that such situation is probably just a symptom of an underlying condition. There is no need to be alarmed. What is important is to be made aware of the conditions and know more about such symptom so that you can find a solution or a treatment. Let me start off here by telling you a bit about that throbbing sound in your right ear and the means and ways of finding the cause and at the same time the cure.

Such consciousness of feeling that also brings about a ringing in your ears is what is more commonly known as tinnitus. This condition is considered to be an ear disorder which happens due to age-related causes like hearing loss or an ear injury or a circulatory system disorder.

Tinnitus entails the annoying sounds in your ear even when there is no external sound present. There are two different types of tinnitus. The first one is called Subjective tinnitus. This is somehow the most common. It can be caused by problems with your outer, middle or inner ear. Aside from the external parts of the ear, it can also be caused by problems with the hearing or auditory nerves. This is the part of your brain wherein the nerve signals that are passed on to your brain is being interpreted as sound.

The next type of tinnitus is the Objective tinnitus. This is the kind wherein the doctor can hear such sounds upon doing an examination. This is a rare type of tinnitus and is possible caused by a blood vessel problem. Sometimes, this problem is also due to an inner ear bone condition or a muscular issue.

As we have said earlier, tinnitus has many different causes. Included herein is the Age-related hearing loss. As for the majority, the sense of hearing weakens as the age builds up. Loss of hearing can cause tinnitus. Instead of hearing normal external sounds, one can hear a buzzing in the ears or a ringing sound.

Another is exposure to loud noise. Exposing your ears to loud noise such as heavy equipment, chain saws, firearms or even the loud volumes of car stereos and iPods all leads to one thing, damage to the auditory nerves. The tiny delicate hairs inside our ear canal gets destroyed and broken when we are exposed to such, thus affecting the electrical impulses that are sent to our brain. Upon happening, the brain then sends out wrong signals and leads us to think that we are hearing different sounds, when in reality, there is no external sound being emitted.

Blood vessel disorder may as well be one of the causes that may explain why you have that throbbing sound in your right ear. In these rare cases, the increase of blood flow in your veins touches the auditory nerve, thus giving out that pulsating or beating sound in your ear. This can also happen specifically in the right ear, or the left, depending on which side your blood vessels go through.

Noise Interferes With Hearing

By julius On November 14, 2008 No Comments

Noise is defined in the dictionary as “any loud, discordant or disagreeable sound”. Oftentimes we get to experience noise in almost every way possible. When we wake up in the morning, the blaring sound of the alarm clock goes on to make us get up and out of bed. When we get to eat breakfast, we hear a somewhat unusual conversation by people over breakfast arguing over something. When we ride our car or any vehicle to transport us to our workplace or to school, we get to witness the loud sound of engines or some wind noise. When we reach our destination, we are faced with a lot of noises, be it in the form of calls through the phone or music through our iPods. We hear loud conversations among people, some even shouting in an uproar. All these and more are our daily dose of noise in our normal lives. Somehow, noise pollution is tagged to be normal since we really cannot experience right away its adverse effects. It is when we start to experience a ringing in the ears even when it is clearly dead silent that makes us worry about such.

At the moment when noise interferes with hearing, let us be considerate and take the necessary steps to take care of our auditory nerves. Failure to do such leads to a disorder more commonly referred to as “tinnitus”. This disorder gives out a sensation of hearing sounds even if there is none. These sounds that are referred to here often relate to that of a thumping in your ears or it’s as if you have buzzing ears ringing. Such sounds can only be heard by you and may sometimes lead to more annoying and painful experiences.

When we come to speak of the subject on noise, people somehow forget or ignore it. Noise is perhaps the most common occupational and environmental hazard as of today. It can be described or further explained in terms of intensity. How much a person perceives its loudness is referred to as intensity while how a person perceives its pitch is referred to as frequency. Both the intensity and frequency of a noise exposure determine the potential damage to the auditory nerve. Even sounds perceived as comfortably loud or bearable noise can be harmful.

Now that we have established that noise is harmful and exposure to such could cause tinnitus, let us arm ourselves against such by knowing how to protect ourselves from it. Firstly, always be aware of the current level of sound or noise you may be exposed to. Most of the time, noise interferes with hearing and you may have that notion that the level of noise is still okay since it is bearable. Again, be conscious of your surroundings. Wear earplugs in noisy places. This will help you lessen the exposure of your auditory nerve to extreme noise. Turn down the volume of stereos, and as much as possible, avoid frequent usage of iPods, headphones and other similar gadgets.
